C & S Wholesale Grocers, Inc. Announced grants to 12 food banks in or near communities where the company has a presence. The grants are focused on child hunger, primarily through the BackPack Program. The program alleviates weekend hunger among food-insecure children by quietly filling back packs with nutritious food on Fridays. More than 19,000 children at 145 elementary schools or other sites will be provided with food through the grants.

Donations were made in 10 different states. In Connecticut, the Foodshare food bank will receive a grant for the BackPack and School Pantry Program for two academic years. The program will involve eleven schools and is expected to reach 1,800 children.
